The idea

A sixteenth-century line and a nineteenth-century line weight the same word differently. If a sense feels modern and the passage is old, treat it as the likely distractor. The period does not decide the answer on its own, but it orders your suspicions before you spend time.

In practice

Old passage, suspect the modern sense.

Where people slip

Period narrows, it does not decide.
