Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 3   AIL 0204 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Step One: Read the Whole Sentence

Captions available

The idea

Read from the capital to the full stop, not the phrase around the word. Period sentences run long, so the clause that fixes a sense often sits two lines away. A candidate who reads only the local phrase is choosing among senses with the deciding evidence still unread.

In practice

Capital to full stop, every time.

Where people slip

The deciding clause is often not adjacent.
