Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 17 AIL 1614 short lesson, about 20 seconds
The English Epic
Captions available
The idea
Milton set out to write an epic in English on a scriptural subject, in blank verse rather than in the couplets Pope would later use for Homer. Unit sixteen gave the glossary's demanding epic definition, and Paradise Lost was built to meet every clause of it.
In practice
An English epic, in blank verse.
Where people slip
Built to meet the definition.
