Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 17   AIL 1617 short lesson, about 20 seconds

An Invocation, on the Greek Pattern

Captions available

The idea

Unit sixteen named the convention: an epic opens by calling a muse to sing through the poet. Milton follows it exactly and then redirects it, invoking not a Greek muse but the spirit that inspired the shepherd who taught the chosen seed.

In practice

The convention, then a redirection.

Where people slip

A Greek form, a scriptural muse.
