Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 17   AIL 1611 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Donne's Yoked Vehicles

Captions available

The idea

He compares things that do not belong together: two souls and a pair of compasses, a parting and beaten gold. The distance between tenor and vehicle is the point, because a comparison that has to be worked for is a comparison the reader must think through.

In practice

The distance is the point.

Where people slip

A comparison to be worked for.
