Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 14   AIL 1301 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Speaking Past the Other Characters

Captions available

The idea

A play cannot report a thought, so it needs a way to let one reach the audience. Two devices do it: a character alone speaking at length, and a character speaking briefly while others stand by unhearing. Neither has a headword in the anchor's glossary.

In practice

Two devices, neither in the glossary.

Where people slip

The band's core tools are undefined there.
