Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 2 AIL 0104 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Line Breaks Are Not Sentence Breaks
Captions available
The idea
Verse breaks lines for rhythm and rhyme, not for sense. A sentence may run four lines or stop halfway through one. Reading a poem sentence by sentence, ignoring where the lines end, recovers the grammar the layout hides.
In practice
Read to the punctuation, not the margin.
Where people slip
Stopping at line ends breaks the sense.
