Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 2   AIL 0107 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Inversion Three: Adjective After Noun

Captions available

The idea

Sonnet 44 has "the farthest earth remov'd from thee", where remov'd describes earth but follows it. Modern English would put the adjective first or rebuild the phrase. The describing word trailing its noun is ordinary in older verse.

In practice

The describing word comes after.

Where people slip

A trailing adjective is not a verb.
