Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 2 AIL 0103 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Find the Main Verb First
Captions available
The idea
Every sentence has a main verb, and in difficult writing it is rarely where a modern reader looks. Finding it first anchors everything else, because the subject sits with it and the rest of the sentence hangs off the pair.
In practice
Locate the verb, then the subject.
Where people slip
Do not read straight through first.
