Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 11   AIL 1037 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Quoted Against Reported Speech

Captions available

The idea

Direct speech gives a character's own words and rhythm; reported speech passes them through the narrator and shortens them. The glossary defines neither. Noticing which a passage uses for which character shows where the narrative sympathy and attention are going.

In practice

Own words, or the narrator's summary.

Where people slip

Sympathy follows the quoting.
