Setting as Argument

The idea

Dickens gives the schoolroom as a plain, bare, monotonous vault. Three adjectives and a noun that belongs to a tomb. Setting is rarely neutral in prose that has a case to make, and its adjectives can usually be read as a comment on the people inside it.

In practice

A vault, plain, bare, monotonous.

Where people slip

The room comments on the man.
