American Literature / Unit 9 AML 0814 short lesson, about 20 seconds
William Lloyd Garrison and *The Liberator*
Captions available
The idea
Garrison founded The Liberator in eighteen thirty-one and opened it with "To the Public", promising to be as harsh as truth and as uncompromising as justice, and refusing to retreat a single inch. He demanded immediate emancipation when even most opponents of slavery wanted it gradual.
In practice
Immediate, not gradual.
Where people slip
The demand for immediacy split the movement.
