American Literature / Unit 9   AML 0819 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Speech, the Versions, and the Record

Captions available

The idea

Truth's speech survives only in others' transcriptions, and they differ: an early report by a journalist present and a later, more famous version written down twelve years afterward with a refrain and a dialect she probably did not speak. The course names the problem rather than choosing.

In practice

Two transcripts, taken years apart.

Where people slip

The famous refrain belongs to the later version.
