Born in Essaka in the Kingdom of Benin, in what is now Nigeria, Equiano was kidnapped with his sister at eleven, shipped to Barbados and then Virginia, sold to a Royal Navy lieutenant who renamed him Gustavus Vassa, and spent a decade at sea before buying his freedom.
