Wheatley to Washington, and to the Earl of Dartmouth
Captions available
The idea
Wheatley addressed a poem to the Earl of Dartmouth in seventeen seventy-three that grounds her love of freedom in her own seizure from her father's home, and another to General Washington in seventeen seventy-six. She wrote inside the Revolution's vocabulary and pressed it toward her own case.
In practice
The Revolution's words, turned on her own capture.
Where people slip
The Dartmouth poem names the kidnapping directly.
