American Literature / Unit 4   AML 0306 short lesson, about 20 seconds

"A City Upon a Hill"

Captions available

The idea

The sermon's most quoted sentence tells the colonists they shall be as a city upon a hill, the eyes of all people upon them. The warning follows at once: deal falsely with God and they will be made a story and a byword. The image is a burden.

In practice

Watched, and answerable for being watched.

Where people slip

The famous phrase arrives inside a threat.
