Captions available
The idea
Winthrop, a Cambridge-trained lawyer, was chosen governor of the Massachusetts Bay Company in sixteen twenty-nine and held the office twenty years. Sailing on the Arbella in sixteen thirty, he delivered "A Model of Christian Charity", imagining a community knit together where the rich may not eat up the poor.
In practice
A governor's sermon, at the crossing.
Where people slip
The sermon argues community, not individual liberty.
