The idea
Thomas Morton, a Devon lawyer who studied the Algonquian peoples among whom he settled, founded Merrymount in what is now Quincy, Massachusetts, arriving with Captain Wollaston in sixteen twenty-four. His colony's maypole and its trade with Native neighbours scandalized Plymouth, which broke it up and sent him home.
