Cabeza de Vaca: Shipwreck, Captivity, and a Changed Eye

Captions available

The idea

Cabeza de Vaca sailed with a Spanish expedition that fell apart, then spent years crossing the southwest on foot, held by and later living among the peoples he met. His Relation describes the country from inside rather than from a deck.

In practice

The only Spanish account written on foot.

Where people slip

Captivity changed what he could see.
