The idea

Ellison was born in Oklahoma City, named for Ralph Waldo Emerson, studied music at Tuskegee and read the modernists. His nineteen fifty-two novel Invisible Man won the National Book Award and was the only novel he published in his lifetime, though he worked on a successor for decades.

In practice

One novel, and a lifetime after it.

Where people slip

A house fire consumed the second's drafts.
