American Literature / Unit 16 AML 1502 short lesson, about 20 seconds
The GI Bill, the Suburb, and the Reader
Captions available
The idea
The witness records thousands of returning soldiers entering college for the first time on the GI Bill, many of them enrolling in creative writing classes, while Iowa and Stanford piloted the first graduate writing programmes. Prosperity moved readers to suburbs with a house, a car and a television.
In practice
Soldiers into classrooms, families into suburbs.
Where people slip
The writing programme is a postwar institution.
