American Literature / Unit 14   AML 1312 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Fragment, Allusion, and the Notes

Captions available

The idea

The poem works by juxtaposing fragments without explaining the joins, and by allusion to Dante, Shakespeare, the Grail legend, Hindu scripture and popular song. Eliot added notes to the first book edition, and readers have argued ever since whether they help or mislead.

In practice

Fragments, allusions, and a set of notes.

Where people slip

The notes are part of the poem's reception, not its key.
