"Mending Wall"
Captions available
The idea
Two neighbours meet each spring to repair the stone wall between them. The speaker asks why a wall is needed where there are no cows, and the neighbour answers only that good fences make good neighbours. The poem gives both lines and refuses to decide.
In practice
Two men, one wall, two sentences.
Where people slip
The famous line belongs to the neighbour, not the poem.
