American Literature / Unit 2 AML 0118 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Satire, Parody, Burlesque
Captions available
The idea
Satire attacks a folly or vice by ridicule, aiming at reform. Parody imitates a particular work or style closely enough to expose it. Burlesque treats a serious subject frivolously or a trivial one grandly. The board names all three as options in a single sample question.
In practice
Attack, imitate, mismatch.
Where people slip
Parody needs a target text; satire needs only a target.
