American Literature / Unit 2 AML 0122 short lesson, about 20 seconds
The Essay and the Sermon as Literary Forms
Captions available
The idea
The essay is a prose attempt on a subject, personal in Montaigne's line and argumentative in the public one. The sermon takes a text and applies it to a congregation, and in Puritan New England it was the dominant literary form. The exam treats both as literature.
In practice
An attempt, and an application.
Where people slip
The exam deals with these to a lesser degree.
