American Literature / Unit 2 AML 0109 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Setting as Place, Time, and Pressure
Captions available
The idea
Setting is where and when a work happens, and in American fiction it does more: the frontier, the small town, the plantation, the city tenement each carry a set of pressures. A question asking the significance of a setting is asking what the place makes possible or forbids.
In practice
Place, period, and the pressure both exert.
Where people slip
Setting is an argument in regional writing.
