Captions available
The idea
Howells, an Ohio newspaper editor's son, joined The Atlantic Monthly in eighteen sixty-six and edited it from eighteen seventy-one to eighty-one. From that chair he promoted realism as a programme, and the anchor names him with Twain and James as one of the movement's main advocates and theorists.
In practice
An editor who could make careers.
Where people slip
His power was editorial as much as literary.
