Regionalism and Local Color
Captions available
The idea
Regionalism, also called local color, records the speech, customs, landscape and work of a particular place before they disappear. Its practitioners write dialect carefully, often frame a tale through an outside visitor, and treat a region as worth the attention a capital usually gets.
In practice
One place, recorded before it changes.
Where people slip
The board calls Jewett, Chopin and Twain regionalists.
