The Midpoint Formula

The idea
The midpoint of a segment averages the endpoints' coordinates: ((x₁ + x₂)/2, (y₁ + y₂)/2).
In practice
Between (2, −3) and (8, 5), the midpoint is (5, 1).
Where people slip
Given a midpoint and one endpoint, the other endpoint lies as far past the midpoint again: from (2, −3) through (5, 1), the far end is (8, 5).
