ACT Preparation / Unit 4 ACT 0309 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Concrete Nouns and Exact Words

The idea
A concrete noun names a particular thing, where a general noun names a category. Precise writing prefers the concrete noun, and the exact word over the impressive one.
In practice
"A bird landed on the building" becomes "A heron landed on the library roof."
Where people slip
A word that sounds formal but means something slightly different is an error, not an upgrade.
