ACT Preparation / Unit 3   ACT 0211 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Subjunctive Were

Captions available

The idea

The subjunctive mood expresses a wish, a requirement, or a condition that is unlikely or untrue. With be, it uses were even where a statement of fact would use was.

In practice

"If I were taller, I would play center." "I wish she were here."

Where people slip

In an untrue condition, "if I was" is the error the subjunctive repairs.
