ACT Preparation / Unit 3 ACT 0214 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Pronoun and Antecedent Agree in Number
Captions available
The idea
A pronoun agrees in number with its antecedent: a plural antecedent takes a plural pronoun, and a singular antecedent a singular one.
In practice
"The students left their bags." "The library extended its hours."
Where people slip
Collective nouns follow the verb rule: a group acting as one unit takes it, and members acting individually take they.
