Models

The idea

A scientific model is a simplified representation of how something works, built to explain observations and make predictions. No model is perfect, but an imperfect model can still be useful.

In practice

A lake model tracking only temperature and oxygen can still predict when fish are stressed.

Where people slip

Judge a model by what it explains and predicts, and by the shortcomings it reports.
