ACT Preparation / Unit 21   ACT 2006 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Descriptive and Hypothesis-Based Science

Captions available

The idea

Descriptive science observes, explores and discovers, usually by induction; hypothesis-based science tests a proposed answer to a specific question, usually by deduction. Most research combines both.

In practice

Cataloguing the insects in a meadow is descriptive; testing whether mowing reduces their number is hypothesis-based.

Where people slip

The boundary is blurred: observations raise questions, and tests produce new observations.
