ACT Preparation / Unit 20 ACT 1917 short lesson, about 20 seconds
The Placebo
Captions available
The idea
A placebo is an inactive treatment, such as a sugar pill, given to the control group so that both groups expect an effect.
In practice
Half the subjects take a vitamin pill and half take an identical pill with no vitamin.
Where people slip
People given a placebo can still improve slightly, the placebo effect, which is exactly why the comparison group needs one.
