ACT Preparation / Unit 20   ACT 1918 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Blinding

Captions available

The idea

In a blinded study, subjects do not know which treatment they receive. In a double-blind study, the researchers working with them do not know either.

In practice

Neither the patients nor the nurses know whose pill is real until the study ends.

Where people slip

Researchers who know the treatment can, without meaning to, treat or judge subjects differently; double-blinding prevents that.
