ACT Preparation / Unit 20   ACT 1908 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Controlled Variables

Captions available

The idea

Controlled variables are the factors kept the same across all trials, so that only the independent variable differs.

In practice

In the bean study, pot size, soil, water and temperature are controlled; only the light color changes.

Where people slip

A factor left free to vary becomes a second possible cause of the result.
