The idea
The treatments are the different values of the independent variable that an experiment applies; an experimental unit is a single object or individual receiving a treatment.
In practice
Red, blue and white light are three treatments; each pot of beans is an experimental unit.
Where people slip
Count units, not measurements: one pot measured five times is still one unit.
