The idea
A hypothesis is a suggested explanation that can be tested. It must also be falsifiable: some possible result would show it to be wrong.
In practice
"The seedlings wilt because of heat from the window" can be tested by cooling the window and watching.
Where people slip
An explanation that no result could ever contradict is not a scientific hypothesis.
