ACT Preparation / Unit 19 ACT 1821 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Matching a Table to a Graph
The idea
To decide which graph shows a table's data, work in three steps. First, check the axes: the right graph has the table's quantities on the right axes, with matching units. Second, describe the table's trend: rising, falling, peaking or leveling. Third, check two specific points, such as the first and the largest, against each graph, and eliminate any that miss them.
In practice
Worked example: an invented table gives a sensor's reading as 1.0 at 25 seconds, 1.4 at 50 seconds and 2.0 at 100 seconds. The trend rises, but more slowly as time grows. A graph rising in a straight line misses the shape; one that rises steeply and then flattens matches, and its points at 25 and 100 seconds read 1.0 and 2.0.
Where people slip
Many graphs share the right direction. Specific points, not direction alone, pick the right one.
