Claims

The idea
A claim is a statement the author asks readers to accept, which evidence must support. An argument's central claim is its thesis; smaller claims support it.
In practice
"School gardens improve attendance" is a claim; the attendance records that follow are its evidence.
Where people slip
A claim can be phrased as plain fact and still need support; how a sentence sounds does not settle it.
