ACT Preparation / Unit 13   ACT 1228 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Scale Factor for Area and Volume

Captions available

The idea

When every length of a figure is multiplied by a scale factor k, its areas are multiplied by k² and its volumes by k³.

In practice

Doubling every edge of a box multiplies its surface area by 4 and its volume by 8.

Where people slip

The course derives this from the area and volume formulas: each length factor carries its own k.
