ACT Preparation / Unit 14 ACT 1303 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Composite Figures
Captions available
The idea
The area of a composite figure is found by splitting it into simple shapes and adding their areas, or by subtracting a cut-out shape from a larger one.
In practice
An L-shape made of a 10-by-4 rectangle and a 4-by-3 rectangle has area 40 + 12 = 52.
Where people slip
Make sure no piece is counted twice where shapes overlap.
