Reading a Map of the Partitions of Poland

Captions available

The idea

The exam shows Poland shrinking in three colors and asks what the map portrays or who took what. Three questions read it: which power took which side, in which order the slices fell, and what was left after seventeen ninety-five. The anchor's map of seventeen eighty-nine shows the kingdom between the first and second partitions.

In practice

Three readings. The sides: Prussia took the west and north, linking Brandenburg to East Prussia, the gap unit 03's map showed; Austria took the south, Galicia; Russia took the east, the largest share in every partition. The order: seventeen seventy-two, a slice from each edge; seventeen ninety-three, Prussia and Russia only, after Poland's reform constitution of seventeen ninety-one alarmed them; seventeen ninety-five, everything remaining, with Warsaw to Prussia. What was left: nothing, a state partitioned out of existence, in the witness's words, until the map of unit 14 restores it in nineteen eighteen.

Where people slip

Two traps. The anchor names only the first and last partitions, so the map's middle color is the witness's. And a map of Poland's partitions is not a map of the Holy Roman Empire's dissolution, which comes under Napoleon in unit 08.
