Ptolemy's Spheres and Why Geocentrism Fit Theology
Captions available
The idea
Ptolemy and Aristotle put the earth at the center inside crystal spheres, close to eighty by the anchor's count. Christianity fitted it: a changing, imperfect earth, perfect heavens, God beyond the last sphere and hell within.
In practice
The planets' paths kept breaking the model, so it grew ever more caveats.
Where people slip
Geocentrism was deduction: a theory the observations were bent to fit.
