Western Civilization II / Unit 5   WC2 0409 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Dialogue, the Trial of 1633, and Galileo's Physics

Captions available

The idea

The Dialogue of sixteen thirty-two let a character called Simplicio lose every argument; the pope took it personally. Tried by the Inquisition in sixteen thirty-three for supporting a condemned doctrine, Galileo recanted, and the book stayed on the Index until eighteen twenty-two.

In practice

Two New Sciences followed: inertia and acceleration in mathematics, refuting Aristotle.

Where people slip

Condemned doctrine, not heresy as such.
