North America: Tobacco, Furs, Puritans
Captions available
The idea
Jamestown was nearly dead by sixteen ten and saved by tobacco; Champlain's Quebec lived on furs; Puritans reached Massachusetts by the thousands in the sixteen twenties. Beside Latin America and the Caribbean the North American colonies were small and unimportant until well into the eighteenth century.
In practice
Slaves for tobacco first, cotton later.
Where people slip
The money was in sugar, the anchor insists.
