Western Civilization II / Unit 4 WC2 0310 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Three Dutch Wars, New York, Jamaica, Florida
Captions available
The idea
Three Anglo-Dutch wars followed, all won by England, and New Amsterdam became New York; wars with Spain gained Jamaica and Florida. The anchor's wars section runs the Dutch wars from sixteen fifty-two to seventy-five and reads them as economics made war.
In practice
The witness: New Amsterdam surrendered in sixteen sixty-four with generous terms.
Where people slip
Fought at sea for trade, not for territory in Europe.
