Captions available
The idea
Within ten years, the anchor says, stockholders drew thirty percent dividends; by sixteen twenty about half of Europe's merchant vessels were Dutch. The Cape of Good Hope was seized in sixteen fifty-two, and after sixteen forty-one only the Dutch kept a post in Japan.
In practice
South Africa's settlement and Japan's one window, both Dutch.
Where people slip
The figures are the anchor's; the witness confirms Japan.
