Western Civilization II / Unit 15   WC2 1423 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Stravinsky's Rite and Schoenberg's Twelve Tones

Captions available

The idea

Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, Scythian fertility rites, was hissed and pelted at its Paris premiere in nineteen thirteen and canonical within years. Schoenberg abandoned tonality and built the twelve-tone method, subverting expectations audiences had trained since the Renaissance.

In practice

A riot, then a classic.

Where people slip

Anchor-only; no witness treats the composers.
